Indianapolis Cultural Districts

The City of Indianapolis aimed to bolster its cultural landscape by forming the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission, dedicated to promoting public art, culture, and local businesses in recognized cultural neighborhoods. Broad Ripple Village, Mass Ave, Fountain Square, the Wholesale District, Indiana Avenue, and the Canal & White River State Park were among the first neighborhoods officially designated as cultural districts by the Cultural Districts Steering Committee. Collaborating closely with the City, local residents, and key stakeholders, our team developed visual identities that captured each district's unique character, forming the backbone of the marketing campaign—from messaging and wayfinding signage to tagline development.

Our process began with information gathering sessions with neighborhood residents and stakeholders to deeply understand the unique cultural experiences within each community. Insights from these sessions guided the concepts that focused on the distinct personalities as well as creative depictions of the neighborhood to shape their final marks. Mass Ave’s 45-degree angular corridor and theatrical personality shines through its custom letterforms, while jazz-inspired graphic elements symbolize the music that resounded through Indiana Avenue.

Our approach focused on both highlighting each district’s distinct character and establishing a consistent size, shape, and legibility standard to unify the cultural districts as a cohesive family. The 1-inch square stamp served as a common framework across all districts, providing a structured space for creative expression. Developing scalable visual identities with supporting graphic elements was essential, enabling adaptability across print, large-scale murals, signage, and digital platforms. In partnership with marketing agency Three Sixty Group, we finalized taglines for each of the six districts.
